They went directly from 4 to 6 speed automatic

and with the manual transmissions, they went from 4 to 7 then 6 then later to 7 again

GM themselves never really had a 5 speed auto outside of the one Cadillac used and BMW borrowed in the mid-2000s.

Another tidbit on GM’s automatics: they included drain plugs on the transmissions they sold to other automakers, but almost never included them on GM’s own domestic cars.

They did use 5-speed manuals in their own cars though, just not the Vette :p

you know - I first read this and thought, “no way, that cannot be”. But you are right. 4 auto and that goofy 4 plus 3 over drive until they went to the 6spd (which still had that goofy 2nd gear skip shift “feature”..)

Every Tremec T56 and TR6060 has the skip shift. It’s very easy to defeat; all you need is your right foot :)

:) yes! I just hate useless nanny stuff that makes a product worse. I regularly 1-3 shift, because it is appropriate and I want to - not due to some yahoo that wants to limit functionality because they think they know better, (ok, stepping off my soap box...)

Well, domestic 5 speeds were horseshit until 2004.
